What exactly is identity theft? How does ID theft happen?
Identity theft involves an individual's personal information — such as name, address, Social Security number or credit/debit account numbers, etc. — being stolen and used to commit credit fraud or identity fraud. Various forms of credit and identity fraud include using a consumer's existing credit account, opening new accounts, acquiring loans and renting property.
One of the best ways to protect yourself and your credit against identity theft is to understand how ID theft occurs and how you can avoid being a victim. Identity theft can occur in any number of ways. Make efforts to safeguard your sensitive personal information in both your everyday activities and while online — the incidence of online identity theft has continued to increase over time. Be sure to shred sensitive documents or lock them in a safe place. Have your mail service stopped if you take any long trips, and take care on the Internet to use secure sites in an effort to prevent online identity theft.
Vigilance is key in minimizing the threat of identity theft. If ID theft is not caught early, significant damage could be done. Victims of identity theft might not realize their predicament until they are denied loans, job opportunities, or worse. Knowing how to avoid being a victim, along with credit report monitoring or credit score monitoring — such as the monitoring products offered by Equifax® — can help you prevent or minimize the damage associated with identity theft.
