What is a notice of correction / add a note?

The Notice of correction/Add a note option lets you add a 200-word message to your credit report. You may want to do this if you think there's something misleading on your report. You should give a clear and accurate explanation of why you think it's misleading.

Possible reasons for a note could be:

  • You've recently married, separated or divorced and have changed your name.
  • You're behind on credit repayments due to redundancy, unemployment or long-term illness.
  • Address your note to any potential lenders who might look at your report. Make sure your statement isn't defamatory (negatively affecting someone's good name or reputation), frivolous or scandalous, or unsuitable for publication.

How can I add a thumb print?

Recently, newspapers have talked about lenders only processing applications for credit where the applicant has given a copy of their thumbprint along with their name and address.

If you want to do this, you'll need a copy of your credit report. Once you have it, write a notice of correction saying that you want to use this process and include the reference number you'll see on your report. We'll then add your notice to your statement so that all future lenders can see it. That's it - you don't need to send us a copy of your thumbprint.

Please bear in mind that although we'll show your notice of correction to the lenders, it's their responsibility to act on it.

If you want to go ahead and write a notice for this, here's what we'd suggest you write:

I, (your name) of (your address), declare that when my signature is needed for any financial product or service I'll authenticate it with my thumbprint. If I do not do this, the service or product should be withheld. Any application without a thumbprint should be considered fraudulent. I'll inform you in writing, signed and thumbprinted, if this changes.
