What is a Court Judgment (CCJ) / Decree?

If you owe money to a lender, they could go to the county court to claim it back. And if the court rules in the lender's favour, they'll issue a county court judgment (CCJ) or decree against you for the amount you owe plus any extra costs.

We don't keep the details of who took you to court, but you can get the details from the county or sheriff court directly.

How long will a Judgment (CCJ) / Decree stay on my credit file?

These stay on your report for six years from the date the court issues them, even after you've paid them. But if you pay the judgment/decree within a month, you can ask for it to be taken off the register and your credit report.

How will a Judgment (CCJ) / Decree affect my credit rating?

This can look bad on your credit report and make it harder for you to get credit. Only the lender can decide whether or not to offer you credit. If your application is rejected, you should contact the lender directly to find out why.

Where does Judgment (CCJ) / Decree information come from?

Registry Trust Ltd is a non profit-making company that the government set up to take care of the statutory public register of county court judgments and administration orders from county courts in England and Wales.

The registry passes the details of all these judgments/decrees, as well as any amendments, to credit reference agencies like us to include in our files.

How do I satisfy or amend Judgments/Decrees & Administration Orders?

England & Wales

Once you've repaid all the money you've been asked to pay, you can change your credit report. To do this, send your proof of payment to the court listed in your credit report and include the court fee of £15.

The court will then send you a certificate of satisfaction. The Registry Trust automatically receives the changes and then lets us know. We'll update your credit report within a month of you paying.

If you repaid your debt within one month of the judgment, the Registry Trust will take it off their register and your credit report. If you pay it back after a month has passed, we'll mark it as 'satisfied'.

Please bear in mind that your certificate of satisfaction only confirms that you've paid the amount of your administration order, not that you've satisfied any county court judgment attached to it. You'll need a separate certificate, which you can apply for after you've paid the judgment debt.

Scotland

When you pay off a money decree you received from the small claims or summary causes sheriff court, you'll need to send proof of payment to the Registry Trust.

Their address is:

Registry Trust
153 -157 Cleveland Street
London
W1T 6QW

You'll need to include a search fee of £4.50 and give them the address where the decree is held if it's different from your home address. Your proof of purchase will need to be a letter or receipt from the person or company you owe the money to (or their agent/solicitor) confirming:

  • the sheriff court concerned
  • the amount of the decree and case number
  • the date of the decree
  • the date you paid in full

The Registry Trust will then let us know and we'll update your credit report. If you paid the debt within one month of the decree, it will be removed completely from both the Scottish Register held by the Registry Trust and from your credit report. If you pay it after a month, we'll mark it on your credit report as 'satisfied'. The Registry Trust will also let us know if your decree is recalled, and we'll then take it off your report.
